After starting her acting career as a stage actress at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, Bell made her Broadway stage debut in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. She then appeared in the action-thriller film Spartan (2004) and received praise for her performance in the television drama film Gracie's Choice (2004).Her first major role was that of the title character in the teen noir the television show Veronica Mars (2004-2007), receiving critical acclaim and the Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television for her performance. She reprised the character in the 2014 movie and the reboot in 2019. In the course of her work in Veronica Mars, Bell starred as Mary Lane in the musical film Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005), reprising the role she had performed in the New York musical of the identical name.Bell played the role of Elle Bishop in the superhero drama series Heroes from 2007 until the year 2008. Bell voiced the narrator in the title role on the Teen Drama Series Gossip Girl. She will reprise the role for the sequel, which will premiere in 2021. Bell also played the role as Jeannie van den Hooven, who is the main female character on Showtime's comedy series House of Lies. Bell was the main character of Eleanor Shellstrop on the critically acclaimed NBC comedy show The Good Place, receiving an Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance. Bell was also the lead character on the streaming show The Woman in the house Just across the street from The Girl in the Window.
