Despacito is a 2017 song made by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi. It was the single that became the most streamed track across the globe within 6 months. The mix of reggaeton with pop music not only brought attention back to the genre, but as well to Latin music generally. In 2015 there were two mostly Spanish-language songs on Billboard's Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. But during the peak of the Despacito's popularity in 2017, there were 19 mainly Spanish tracks that made the Top 100. And in 2020 there were 41. Justin Bieber's bilingual remix Despacito was released in 2017. After that, some of the most popular artists started collaborating with reggaeton performers. Drake collaborated with Bad Bunny on MIA (2018) in addition to Madonna collaborated with Maluma for the release of Medellin. In 2020, several Reggaeton performers were expressing displeasure about the advancing of the genre towards the mainstream. But a newer generation such as Rauw Alejandro was keen to keep the trend going. It often blended elements from electronic dance music and other forms.
